listen my man i work at jiffy lube and i recommend that you use hig milage oil...if your honda is a 94-02 i am positive that you should use 5w20...now about h high milage oil...this particular oil uses addiives that retard and sometimes even stop any future signs of oil leaks..you burning oil because you have a minor oil leak or a hole somewhere that the pressure squeezes it out of...the highmilage oil is a bit thicker but i works..TRUST ME ON THIS ONE!!!

Honda changed the recommendation to 5W-20 due to emissions and gas mileage benefits. 5W-30 will protect your engine better. I don't really care if I get 26.3 or 26.5 MPG, so I prefer 5W-30.

I understand why oil burns, but why would there be less oil bun off with synthetic as opposed to dino?

As of this AM at the ol' gas station...

26.52 mpg...

That's with the recent EGR port cleaning and running the regular Castrol 5W-30 and 87 octane.

Is that normal for you? Seems below normal for an F22...What's the city/hwy mix? Also, did you also remove the EGR valve and clean it off or just the ports?

It seems kind of low to me too.

That mpg is with mainly highway driving these days, about a 70 round trip to the office; but it's mixed with a little city too. And I drive 65-80.

No, I did not take off the EGR valve itself and clean it out. HOWEVER, I have purchased a gasket for it already, so I can clean it soon. Think that will make up whatever difference?

If you don't have a check engine light on, I doubt it. But it's not that much work, just spray carb cleaner in the holes on the bottom and clean it out with some q-tips. If you're still getting bad MPG, you might want to try seafoam or manually clean your TB/intake mani if you've done all other basic maintenance.

I have maintained my car very well. I'm on top of it and always have been.

No check engine light, but I'll plan to do the EGR valve shortly.

I'm still debating on what to do about the oil too.

Oils like the High Mileage Castrol and Mobil 1 (to a lesser extent) prevent burnoff because they swell the rings.

They also do a good job at cleaning out carbon deposits through their extra detergents which is a mixed blessing. Higher mileage engines tend to have a nice layer of carbon on the piston top which actually bumps compression. With that gone though, you have a much better surface for the fuel to atomize.

The feedback on HM, that I've read so far, seems to be good overall. The part that makes me hesitate is that if these other oils clean off everything, then does that increase my chances of having more leaks form because there's nothing there to block them off anymore?
