just a quick suggestion... check out my kenwood. its got 4.5v pre outs. i know it doesnt seem like a big difference but it look 10X better and it has many more adjustables. a built in, pretty technical, EQ and you can get sirius if you want, their version of XM radio. its smaller but they make a nifty little pocket for the head unit. its MP3 compatible and i dont think there is anything the alpine has that this doesnt. this actually has probably a lot more to it. i love it, i wouldnt go for anything else!

btw, the alpine doesnt have a feature where you can turn off the internal amp to the speakers if you amp them when you replace them... the kenwood does, creating a huuuuuuuuuge difference in the quality of the sound. if you have any more questions i would be more then willing to help you out!

mine (going by retail prices)...

head unit: Pioneer DEH-P8400MP ... $600

subs: dual 15" solo baric L5 ... $750

amp: rockford fosgate 800x4 amp ... $400

custom box + install ... $100

total install ... $70

its about 2 g's. go figure.

how much i paid: subs(donated), box(donated), amp(donated), HU(385 shipped), install(70) = $455 total. + neons = approx $500
