At about 60k miles it shifts better than my AV6 did when it was brand new, although my benz did cost as much buying it at 8 years old as my accord was new. I know 3 people personally(many many more via the web) that have had problems with their 6G AV6 tranny, one of my friends had his replaced twice with under 70k miles on the clock, and is now driving a maxima in the same conditions with 80k miles on it now without a hint of trouble, and MUCH smoother off throttle shifts. If you're doing nothing but highway driving, the AV6 tranny might live well, but under harsh conditions, like a stop and go commute through the hills of San Fran, they aren't the best around. The 7G V6 5 speed auto is a step in the direction, but still nothing like a real luxury or sport oriented tranny. It's a decent median, but they really aren't the best around. Go drive a Camry or Maxima and see the difference.
No way, a $80,000 Mercedes has a better tranny than a fricken Honda Accord.

I only paid $25k. ...welllll... it was $98k new though I was more comparing an 8 year old car to a new accord since it seemed that the accord tranny was a godsend. They aren't bad, but they aren't great, not even in their class, although the 7g 5sp auto is pretty decent for it's class, but personally I think my buddy's trailblazer has a nicer shifting tranny than my accord did. I had many occasions before putting on the tranny cooler that my accords tranny went bonkers on me, pretty much ignored the pedal position and flaked out(got too hot). I had one time it just refused to shift at all while I was towing my jetski up to the lake. I pulled over, put it in park, then back in drive and it seemed ok. Of course when I took it to the dealer there was no problem found, they even said the tranny fluid looked good, so something went wierd with it.

Our commutes are probably way different though. I commute 15 miles each way. It takes me anywhere from 10 minutes to over an hour to make it each way, on average it takes 40 minutes in nasty stop and go traffic. The driving here is hellish on trannies.

I didn't say it was great, or by any means good, but it's much much better than some cars I've driven. It's not nearly as bad as people say it is.

The automatic transmission on the 6thG Accords isn't that bad. I've beat the fuck out of mine to hell and back, and while yes -- it has been slipping for almost 30,000 miles, it hasn't failed yet. And I STILL beat the hell out of it.

I'll hit redline a few times everyday, and maybe once a week or so I find the room to stretch it out to 120-130MPH (shhhhh!!)

I've learned to "choose" my shift points in my car, i.e. I can make my car shift anywhere after 2200RPM. If I want to shift into 3rd at 2,500 I can make it. If I want it to shift at 4K, I know how.

Edit: Is the reason automatics hold value better because they cost more in the beginning? The only car in recent memory I can think of that had an manual transmission that wasn't cheaper than the automatic version was the 7thG AV6. They're listed at the same price, but the manual is so much more of a better buy.

I would def. go with manual... but high boosted cars run better with auto.. this is 15+ boost, so if your boosting high or planning 2 think about an auto

I don't agree with that, especially on Hondas. I think I had to have $400 worth of work done to my car (aside from routine maintenance) between 36k and 100k miles. If the warranty went at 150k it'd be a different story, but as long as you maintain the car well and don't beat on it I don't think you need to spend at extra $1200 for it. Hell, I got my whole tranny replaced for less than that.

kenton: automatics have better resale value because they're more desirable. And the shift point thing is exactly what I was saying, I've driven other cars where it's nearly impossible to choose when to shift.
