I think his car is fine, that electric noise he hears I think that's just what Honda engines do. My Accord has always made a nice hum until it get's fully warmed up.

I'm sure a 0w-20 Synthetic offers the same if not better protection then a 5w-20 conventional oil. I ran 0w-20 Synthetic many a winter in a Mitsu Eclipse for years, sold the car with out ever an issue ran like new.
Ran 0w-30 all the time in my engines in the winter. Never had a problem. Just a quicker & smoother startup, and warm up.

When I tracked the break in of my Accord via MPG, it leveled off greatly after 1000mi. At 1500 mi he is likely OK. He isn't going to ruin the engine by switching to synthetic at 1500mi, many brands even put synthetic in on the assembly line.
Yes most manufacturers use specific lubricants in new vehicles that require a break in period....I wouldnt have switched to synthetic just yet either
the smart thing to do since its NEW and possibly under warranty is NOT look for advice from a website and go have a HONDA service tech drive it....they should know if its "normal" or not and advise you from there.

i'm not certain about the new accords, but my s2k came with mineral break-in oil from the factory to properly seat the rings
