I think you are right, I believe that break in oil is special.
When I tracked the break in of my Accord via MPG, it leveled off greatly after 1000mi. At 1500 mi he is likely OK. He isn't going to ruin the engine by switching to synthetic at 1500mi, many brands even put synthetic in on the assembly line.
