I've got a friend here who owns a 98 AV6 with a slipping transmission. It slips during gear shifts and makes a horrible noise when put into reverse. It's got roughly 85K on the odo and she was able to raise a stink with Honda (1-800-999-1009) and they called the local dealer and the dealer called her and said we'll replace it all for free but this one thing (EKG? ERG? Something that's 3 letters and starts with an E) but that was only $200.
At any rate, I'm preparing to call Honda and complain as well, however I need a little background knowledge before I call and complain about mine (previous complaints about this can be 'search'ed)
My questions:
What years of the 6th was recalled?
Which engine/transmission combos did the recall cover? (F23, J30, 5spd/AT)
Why was it recalled?
I want to call and complain too, but I wanted to sound intelligent. Thanks for your help. Maybe I can save myself $2500ish, and maybe if enough people complain we can get it recalled.

It sounds like an "EGR", which would have been unrelated. The transmissions that had a problem were on the j30 engines only (v6), the f23 engine/tranny combo's had no update/service bulletin on them. It was never a recall, If you had a problem Honda simply "extended" your factory warrenty on the transmission only. You can complaint forever but Honda's has extended it for over 100k and that is all they will budge. Are you having a problem or just calling to get something for free? Even if you have a V6 and you tell them it's having problems it will still need to be inspected at a dealer and then it is the dealer's decision if it is bad. It's not like you can just get one cause you want piece of mind.

I've got an F23/A1 with an AT. It slips during the day, but I don't get the popping in reverse noise she does. I'm sitting at about 98K miles on my car, so I guess I better get to calling if I hope to get anything done. You stated it was the J30 only, so I may be SOL, but it's worth a shot. . .
For the guy with the f23 tranny problem, it all depends on if you've kept up with your factory recomended services, how many claims you've had on the car for warr. in the past, etc.. I would be nice but persistant. I would explain to them you have had many Honda/acura vehicles (even if it's your first) and you will not buy another because of the many tranny problems you've heard about. Believe me, Honda is worried about the problems they are having in the tranny dept. An example would be the new TSX. They haven't come out with why but I have one right now that hasn't even been sold and they want to replace it even though it works because they say it may have a problem (bad batch). It's got 10 miles on it and I'm pulling the trans. and replacing it with a new one. If you have recipts from any places you've done maintance on your car that will help big time. It would really help to have like a recipt for a tranny fluid replacement. This will weigh out in your favor. Good luck, in the end I honestly think the most you will get is you will have to pay the labor and honda will cover the costs of the part. Let us know what happens.

Yeah, oh yeah. I bought the car at 71K for $9,500 last August (at the time KBB said $11K, this was a private individual who just had a baby and needed a 4dr). They kept up with EVERYTHING, all the scheduled -anything- as did I. When I got the car, the only thing I had to replace was 1 TOYO tire (nail) and the air filter, everything was tip top. I change the oil every 3K, I let my local mechanic let me know when everything else needs to be fixed. We had a transmission fluid change about a month before I started slipping (not a flush.)
I plan to gather a lot of information and call and be something like "I understand that some of the transmissions were recalled on the 6thG, although I'm not covered under the recall, I'm experiencing a lot of the same problems. I only buy Honda and Acura vehicles because I've always heard they are reliable, etc. . ."
