Default 99 Honda Accord "Shifter will not come out of park"

Hey guys and gals I got a problem The wife calls me and says the car will start and the wheel turn, but will not come out of park. Well between the time I get home to help she is up and gone. She said that our shade tree mechanic told her to move the wheel back and forth and try that ( seemed to be the one that worked) and the Honda dealer made her put the key inside the power supply. Now she say the radio will not come on. I'm sure that blew a fuse. My question is what kind of problem would that be and has anyone had that happen before? The next time she started it she said that it was a little hard to get it out of park. Any ideas or suggestions in mucho welcome.

P.S. Thanks In Advance

Well my sister had a similiar problem like this.
The culprit: Before she even came to a complete stop ( like parking the car etc... or pulling into our driveway) she would put the car in park before it even came to a complete stop.

She messed up the shift linkage....Something like that.

My friend had a problem like that on his 5th Gen 4 cyl. The shifter wouldn't move for shit...we added som Honda A/T fluid and it moved fine after that. Yours could be more serious. If I'm not mistaken, there should be some sort of emergency release.

It has not done it again. Went by the parts store and replaced the fuse from were the dealership told the wife to stick the key into the power outlet/cigerette lighter.....I still don't understand that one. Our shadetree told her to keep turning the wheel as she tried to get it out og gear and I think that is what fixed the problem. I have read some about the trash getting into the shifter and sensor, but the trash should not be a problem. If anyone has anything else to add please be sure to post it.

I also do not know were the emergency release is. Does anyone else on a 99 Accord LX ?

All auto-trans cars have an interlock system that's supposed to prevent you from shifting out of park, unless you're standing on the brake pedal. (OK, I hope it isn't as simple as forgetting to step on the brakes...)

If that system screws up, you can still release the auto-trans shift lever. I haven't had to do this, so I'm a little vague. You have to snap off that little trim ring around the shift lever. There's a slot where you insert a key (or something like a key) which lets you shift out of 'park'. I guess that slot is sorta in the same general area as the cigarette lighter?? I think there's a picture in the owner's manual?

The whole brake pedal thing is the most accurate so far. If the brake light switch stops working (depending on how it's wired) it will cause the shifter to NOT come out of park. Might check that out too....

Yup I'd check that out first. This was a common problem on 4th gen Accords. That brake release cable would get jammed, and not allow you to get the car out of Park. I had to have mine replaced, and so did a friend, but it was all fine after that.
