All auto-trans cars have an interlock system that's supposed to prevent you from shifting out of park, unless you're standing on the brake pedal. (OK, I hope it isn't as simple as forgetting to step on the brakes...)

If that system screws up, you can still release the auto-trans shift lever. I haven't had to do this, so I'm a little vague. You have to snap off that little trim ring around the shift lever. There's a slot where you insert a key (or something like a key) which lets you shift out of 'park'. I guess that slot is sorta in the same general area as the cigarette lighter?? I think there's a picture in the owner's manual?
