Default New '96 Accord Owner

I just purchased my grandma's '96 Accord LX, and I have a couple of questions I was hoping someone could answer.

1) The power mirrors don't work.... Is there an easy fix for this? Is this a common problem?

2) I've seen some keyless entry key fobs for a 96-98 accord on ebay. When I purchased the car, I didn't get a key fob. If i purchase one, will it work and if so, how do I go about programming it.

3) Finally and more critically, I've been told that the timing belt on most 4 cylinders need to be replaced after 60,000 miles.... Its a safe bet that the timing belt has NOT been replaced on my accord. Should I replace it now? or is there a different milage?

If there are any other quirks that anyone might know about my '96 Accord, I would be forever thankful. Thank You in advance.

Actually the timing belt should be replaced around 100,000, though I've seen cars go a lot longer without it being changed, you should be safe if the car only has 60k on it. You should however change your tranny fluid(thats a cheap thing that helps ensure longevity)
As far as the Keyless entry, call a Honda dealership and ask them to run a check on your VIN and see if it has the Honda Keyless system installed, most likely, being it's an LX, it does not have it.
As for other things, maybe put a new set of NGK plugs in, maybe new wires, distributer Cap and Button..etc..just normal maintance stuff... Change the oil too
Dont know anything about the mirrors though

Welcome. If your grandma is like most grandparents, that thing is probably in great shape, good catch.

LX - probably no keyless. You can get that taken care of by having an alarm with keyless installed. That's what I have on my 99 LX.

Mirrors. I'd trouble shoot it...start with the fuses, then see if the motors are getting power by checking voltage at the wires than unplug from the mirrors. If so, the motors may be toast. The fact that both don't work make it sound like it may be something like a fuse or wiring. But if both don't work, you could buy new motors or new mirrors off ebay pretty reasonably.

Thanks for your replies.... I called a dealership and they said that the keyless entry was an add on option. Soo... what I need to do is see if I can locate the keyless entry module on the vechicle, does anyone know where this may reside? Next pertaining to the mirrors, I opened the hood found a fuse box in the right side of the vehicle, and there are no fuses missing or blown. and everything that is labeled works correctly. Is there another fuse box on the vehicle? Otherwise i'm going to have to tear apart the door to get at the L-R switch.

Thanks for all your Help!

Check underneath thr dash on the driver's side. There should be a blue box if you have keyless, you'll know it was added on because some lines look like they were spliced into with fused links. I'm almost positive thats the keyless unit.

There should be another fuse box, perhaps 2 more. On my 99 Accord there is also fuses in the driver side footwell - under the steering wheel, and also on the passenger side of the dash. When the door is open, you can see a small door in the side of the dash.

If all those fuses are in working order, then take off the little triangles on the inside of the front doors. Unplug the wiring harness to the mirrors. Take a multimeter (about $20 at an automotive store) and see if the harness is sending signals when you try and control the mirrors. If so, then check out the motors.

Thanks guys!, You are going to laugh at this one!...

I found the second fuse box with a fuse labled R/C Mirrors..."Jackpot!" I thought. pulled the fuse out...it was fine...so I unscrewed the plastic piece that holds the mirror controller and the power windows... pulled it out and wouldn't ya know it, the power mirror controller was UNPLUGGED! SO.. i plugged it back in, buttoned it up and everything works perfectly!

while i was under there looking at the fuses, I also noticed a blue box. The box is manufactured by TRW and has the following part number on it...38600-SV7-A12. I sent a part inquiry to TRW asking about whether it is the keyless entry module. Do any of you know? Thanks again, you guys have been a big help!

dude, I'm cheap. Why lay down $150 when a key fob is 15 bucks on ebay. All I want to do is lock the car. Its a stock Honda Accord not a Bentley. I also don't like the fact that I can't lock the door from the inside, I have to physically put the key in from the outside to lock the car. I'm not being rude, its just I live in a small town where everyone knows ur name, and the only aftermarket thing in it is my $50 Wal-Mart Radio, and perhaps my MP3 Player.

you can lock it from inside the car, you have to pull the interior door handle and then hit the lock button at the same time. My moms 91 accord and my 94 are both like this, for some odd reason my old 91 civic would lock just by hittin it.
