Rust prevention/inhibition
If anyone has seen an Accord from 90 on can attest that they rust almost always on the rear fenders right about the wheel wells. Does anyone have any tips/suggestions on how to combat this?
ooooh ... you want to fight the rust already there.
sand down the infected area with a heavy grit paper
bondo and fill in the spot
prime, paint, and clear coat
i did it on a 93 lexus gs300 and it ended up being pretty nice.

it's a design flaw from honda... even the best kept 4th gens in snowy regions start to get this if they were used as winter cars. keep in mind that if you decide to bondo it, you have to remove as much of the "infected" metal as possible, and then use a rust killer on the part that remains. i find the stuff that turns rust inert and intoa primer works best.
you can domo arigato to the honda engineers for that beautiful brown patch we all know and love.

does it only rust in snowy weather?
my car was a florida only car and will probably continue to be so but i live next to the ocean, im the second owner on a 96 ex but noticed the plastic wheel well on the drivers side fender is broken and its exposing the backside of the back fender, should i be worried about it rusting out over time?

Thanks for the feedback. I live in Chicago, so it's road salt central around here. Something I found on a Honda care website, is to remove the rubber strips that line the quarter panels, as they trap moisture between the seams. They then recommended you pour motor oil on the insides of the quarter panels twice a year. I've tried the bondo and naval jelly already. The car still has a nice finish as I always waxed at least twice a year, and it is only in the rear where it rusts, which seems typical. I've always noticed that Accords have this common problem, aside from power antenna's failing. So far mine still retracts and closes all the way (knock on wood).
i3igpete: Do you know what that rust killer product is called?

I was just going to recommend the removal of the rubber strips that line the panels. Nobdy seems to figure that out.
My Vigor has a decent amount of rust on the 1/4 panels after seeing eleven New England winters. I'm cutting out new sheetmetal, touching it up with bondo and painting it with an oil based paint in a few weeks.
