Default Fuel Gauge problems

I just noticed today that after filling my accord up full and the gauge went to the top, about 10 minutes later the gauge read only 3/4 full. I thought maybe I had a serious gas leak or something because it kept on going down. Then after I shut the car off and let it sit for a while, I took it for a drive and magically the gauge went back up to full! What the hell is going on? Should I be worried and take it to be fixed? Keep in mind this all happened this morning.

It's your fuel sending unit. I've been through three on my '98 Accord.

Do you think its the actual sending unit itself that has gone bad, or could it just be a bad ground connected to the sending unit? How much is a new sending unit and is it possible to install a new one myself?

There were problems with the original fuel sending unit in the sixth generation Accord. My first one went bad about six months after I had the car. Same kind of problem you described. Fill up and only see 3/4 of a tank. Dealership replaced the first one and it happened again. The next time they admitted there was a design flaw and told me to wait because a redesign was in the works. It took two more sending units but the last one I got has lasted for about 2.5 years.

I doubt if it is a ground problem. All of my problems were associated with the unit itself. All of mine were covered under warranty.

If your car is out of warranty, the unit can be accessed through a cover plate in the trunk. Never had to replace one myself, so that's about all I can tell you. Good luck.

Theres a similar problem with the 5th gen. My car is actually having the problem fixed right now. Its a case of an engineer saying "nothing can possibly go wrong with this piece" which means they make it a ***** to get to.

Cost of part: about 30 bucks
Cost of labor: about 95-115 bucks

Actually, Honda has this registered as a recall problem on many Accords. Two of my four had to be resent back to the dealership to get the fuel sensor replaced because what the engineer told me was that the gas that is burned creates a layer of _____ (forgot what chemical it was called) which covers the sensor and therefore it gives you bad readings. They just replace it under warranty if you're a 6th gen.

Interestingly, my car has chosen to have this same problem after i installed my rev indig gauges. When I fill up, it only fills up to 3/4 full. I have a 2001 accord, so is it possible that this has been fixed on the 2001 accord? Will the dealer give me probs saying that it's not hte fuel sending unit? I need to know, cuz I'm looking for reasons that my fuel needle is jacked, and I'm running out.
