I want SOL
Hi guys, im kinda new here, i currently have a 93 dx sedan civic. But currently im lookin to get a del sol, most likely a SI (or anythin with a vtec). After my stock engine blew on my dx i had a vtec sohc dropped and love it. I am needing some help in deciding on a del sol, like: What type of problems do they have? (i heard alot about leaky roof) Can they be made pretty fast? (speed wont be my main goal, the car just looks fun) What year should i look for?(i noticed the 97 doesnt have the fog lights in the bumper anymore, wich i want) My friend has a sol and looks awesome. Should i scrap my 5th gen civic for a sol? or keep it and try to come up with the money in todays sh!tty economy?
any suggestions would be greatful (but dont correct me on any grammar)

pretty much anything you can do to a Civic, you can do to a Sol. they are basically the same thing with different sheet metal. If I were you, I would look for a 96 or a 97 DOHC VTEC model. You will initially pay more over the cost of an S or SI model, but it is every bit worth it.

That's pretty funny man. SOHC engines can compete with B's with very little effort. From the sound of it, he's just getting into things, so a b16 might be a little much. What's better to mess up from something you did? A d that you can replace for under 300, or a b that will run at least 500??? D's are like Lego's. Cheap, durable, and easy to work with.
Would you like to buy my Sol? I have no engine mods for good gas milage but I have a newly painted vader front bumper on there. Depending on how much you want to add, I may thow in my alpine/infinity stereo setup, but I really love them so it'll be hard and take many hours of goodbyes. The targa top doesn't leak too much, and there is a fix for it. TeamSol I believe has this manual which I followed and tightened my roof. It helped, but I used really thin washers so it didn't really help much. If you can get in the Alabama area, stop by and I'll point you around the Sol.
i just bought my Sol and heres the lowdown on the years, the models are pretty self-explanatory:
93: first american year, aux lights, worst year for quality not only beacuse of age but design flaws as well (rare issue for honda but for some reason the 93' just aint the greatest.) the tops had a recall to fix leaking, check if the owner has done this before considering.
94: not much diffrent, VTEC came out
95: last year for aux lights, redisigned to fix the roof and other problems you wouldnt expect in a honda. interior trunk latch installed for first time (very handy when dealing with the top) personally i think this year is best .:naughty:
96: change in airdam look, slight length increace slight power increace in s and si to a 1.6L
97: last american year, its gonna have less miles than any other normally just because its been driven less. i think its the best year if you dont like the look of the aux lights.
overall a Del Sol can be a great car no matter what year you get, each ones gonna have its own quirks and oddities. some older models will never leak, some newer ones leak like a sieve. but leakage would be the most common complaint i know of from solers, that and all the people who want to take your car because its just that great.
this place will help alot, plus you can get opinions from people actually know their stuff so will http://www.teamdelsol.com/

I just don't get the point of getting a car that's more than you can handle, or will be more expensive to mod because you're scared of doing the work.
I've seen guys at the track who have never driven at a track before (road course), brand new cars, flip them, crash them, etc, etc, only because the car was too much for them to handle. And this is after they PAID SOMEONE to put the mods on their cars.
It's just sad!
Why not start small, mod whatcha got, or spend less money, and do a swap?
Ever seen a starlet at the drag strip? Guys throw rotaries in them, V-8's, etc, and they haul ass. What starlet came stock with anything other than a carbed 4 banger? My point is that there is always room for improvement, and once you get over the fear to mod, you can go balls out, and have something better than a stock b16. You just have to know where you're going before you do it!
