but its given me the same code TWICE now for a bad oxygen sensor...the SAME oxygen sensor.. i replaced the primary one ("A", up front under the hood) last night..and 40 miles after i reset the check engine light it came back on...that is my current problem. i bought the car used with no warrenty and i dont want to take it to a honda dealer and then fix it and lube and probe me up the ass b/c I DONT HAVE THE $ to pay them! im trying to avoid honda dealers at all costs!
you're missing the point. warranty = you don't pay.

it's a KNOWN PROBLEM with 97 civic ECMs. there is not any misfire condition happening, it's a defective ECM reporting a false code. bring it in, they replace it at no cost to you. i work at a dealership. i'm sitting here right now. if you brought it in here right now, you'd get it replaced for free.

if you were paying attention, you'd notice i said this is covered under the extended emission warranty. which is 14 years, 150,000 miles. you are covered since you have 77,200 miles, which is less than 150,000.

you asked what was wrong. i told you. i just asked two technicians and a service advisor here as well, and they said that's the problem 99% of the time. the only other thing that causes this is a cracked manifold, which creates a genuine misfire condition, and you would feel it while driving. this generally only happens on the DX & LX models, which have manifold convertors...which are pieces of shit and crack from the catalytic converter heat all the time. you have an EX, which has a normal exhaust manifold and an underbody converter.

if you insist that i am wrong, and don't want to fix it, fine. i've only been doing this for 2 years, what do i know right? drive it all you want. nothing else is gonna happen to your car from this, other than the light coming on all the time. it won't cause any problems with driveability, and the car will not "blow up" from this. my check engine light is off. i don't really care if you choose to have yours stay on. all i am doing is offering the information you asked for.

dealerships are there to fix the problem correctly, and inform you what else is wrong with your car. you don't have to do any suggested work that they tell you about. if they say, hey we fixed your ECM for free, but your brakes need to be replaced, tell them you don't want to do it, and leave.

but apparently you have faith in your local autozone, who gladly told you to replace O2 sensors and maybe try to fix your glow plug wiring, since you have a non vtec DIESEL civic. you paid them, didn't you? and look how far that got you.

think a little bit about this one.

contrary to popular belief, the dealership isn't ALWAYS evil.

instead of complaining about what could be wrong, and how some guy who isn't even ASE certified, let alone Honda certified, screws up by giving you the wrong parts, maybe you can go to the dealership and have them look at it.

from what I hear, they know what they're doing.

ur the man dude.

Chick... listen to the man. He's helping and you're not listening.

If you don't feel comfortable actually driving to the dealership, call the service department and tell them that you heard about the defect and you wanted to have it looked at WITH NO CHARGE!

If it's a defect, they have to look at it and fix it for FREE!

And he's absolutely right about leaving if they try to fix something else. That's their job, they are supposed to make money for the dealership, but you can refuse anything. The problem won't get fixed because you're not able to fix it regardless of what AutoZone tells you.

I'd go right back down there and take the O2 sensor back that you bought and go right to the dealership.

Heck, I don't even really like you and I'm trying to help. :screwy:
