LS or B16
I need some input on weather I should put a B18b in my 93 hatch or a B16a. I don't wan't to spend too much money and I want it to be reliable. Will my hatch be faster with a stock b16 or stock LS ? Does anyone know how much money appx it would cost to put a turbo on an LS, (parts, labor, etc) Please help and also how much lighter is a b16?
OK look at it like this say you get the LS motor and everything else you need for the swap you might get a deal on it for $800- $1100. Then you want a turbo thats another $1800 at least. then what are you going to do to the LS engine put a VTEC head on it. Well shit you should have just spent the extra money in the first place to get that extra horsepower. There arent to many quality performance parts for an LS unless you do them internaly which can be expensive.
so go on get the VTEC.... you know you want to. And if you do decide to put a turbo on the VTEC you be in for one hell of a ride

do you know whether a stock LS will be faster than a stock b16a? I know the LS has low end. also I was thinking if I got the LS, I would just with turbo and not vtech because I kinda want a reliable car. What do you think?
The LS motor is cheaper and has more torque - yes a B18b is gonna be a little faster than a B16a - and it has less compression so you can run a turbo on it stock. Throw in some cams in that B18b and you got one hell of a motor! If you are considering a B16a, than why not hold out for a B18c? The B16a is not any significantly lighter than a B18b. I would stay away from LS vtec if you want reliability and your car is a daily driver. I'm considering a B18b for my hatch as well for these 4 reasons - more displacement, more torque, lower compression, lower cost. And yes, you can run a turbo on it reliably - more so than on a B16a with stock compression. I'm sure you're gonna get a lot of opinions on this one, but dollar for dollar you can't beat the LS swap in your hatch. :thumbup:

okay so heres the story
i have a b16a in a 92dx hatch weight 2000 running stock dx exhaust and stock 13 inch steelies. i spent around 3000 for motor installed
my roommate has a b18b in a 93 cx hatch weight 1850 running 3inch crush bent exhaust and 16 in rotas with very good dunlops. he spent around 3000 for motor installed
then my buddy has a 95 ex coupe with a fully built ls turbo running 2.5 inch exhaust and 14 in steelies and bald ass tires and running 7pi he spent around 7000 for motor installed and still isnt 100% on all compontents needed to bump up the boost to 14psi like the motor was designed to hold

b16a hatch 15.5 @ 88.8
b18b hatch 15.2 @ 90.3
b18b turbo 13.5 @ 106.4
*note* real shitty track it was once an old airstrip so it goes a little uphill.
as for the comment on the low end power yeah every race between the b16 and the b18 hatches it seemed like the b18 had the b16 by a car and 1/2 off of the line every time. but it makes for sweet races to watch the b16 reel the b18 in. so as you can see it is relitivly close races between the b18 and b16
oh and the turbo'd b18 yeah its fun to watch him destroy vetts. and thats only on 7psi he is bumping it up to 11psi next weekend cause his first boost controller broke and now he has a new one along with slicks now so we are hopin for 12's
and another thing there was a ls/vtec turbo crx with slicks out there running 12.45 was the best i saw my buddy said he hit a 11.9

you have to rev the piss out of a b16 to get any power out of them - yeah, they'll handle it, but why not get the same performance out of less revs and cheaper too?! I do not care what other people say, but a stock b18b will always spank a stock b16a - bottom line! In fact, when I just had bolt ons on my 93 D16Z6 I had no problem walking any 99 or 00 stock si, and that motor had 35 less hp than the B16a - explanation would be that the torque band on the Sohc vtec comes in much sooner (around 2500) than a b16, which wakes up around 5000 rpm. Yes, it's all about torque - that's why a b18b hatch is at least 3 tenths faster than a b16a hatch in the 1/4 mile. If you like to rev the crap out of your motor, get a b16 - if you want torque and drivability (not to mention the advantage of .2 liters more displacement and a cheaper swap) get a b18b. They're both good engines - but each has its own advantages.
