Default 93 VTEC Question

I am going to be putting a motor into my 93 Honda Civic. Its a D15 Block. I tracked down a VTEC engine thats also D15. What is involved with swapping the two? Can I just put the motor in and use the car while I get up the money to get the VTEC computer and harness or do i have to put them in with the motor?

Any help would be great! I am swapping due to a really bad cylinder head and it will just be easier to replace the engine.

i'm 99% sure the only vtec D15 engine is a civic VX engine, which is made for fuel economy. so, if you're doing the swap for power, that engine is not the way to go.

beyond that.... id wait until you get all the parts you need to do the swap. if you're gonna do it, do it right.

I found a D15 VTEC that runs 130 HP and thats what i was thinking accept for the fact that my cylinder head on my current motor is horrible! I live in CA so it really limits my options for swapping legally.

d15b is the other one... it's pretty much the JDM version of the d16z6.

And I'm with this guy, wait until you have everything ready to go before you swap.

Yea that sounds like what I need to do. Its effing california that is pissing me off right now cause basically if i swap this for a VTEC even though its the same block number I still have to go throught the freakin referee to make it smog legal! JDM motors don't come with emission controls which isn't bad I can take it off the old motor but I have to wire up the VTEC or go with USDM. USDM is a puss motor and I don't want it LoL.

**SIGH** what I will go through for power

USDM motor is pretty much the exact same thing, only with 100cc more displacement :eh: If anything the USDM d16z6 motor is better than the d15b.

And the things you'll do for power? 125 hp is still straight up pedestrian... just saying :hs:

Pretty much is but it would be good platform to work off of towards a bigger goal. I am on tight budget thats why i am looking to start out low. I can't put a D16 in because of california because the OBD doesn't match. This whole state sucks my left nut I wanna go somewhere were your aloud to do shit to your car LoL.

Just get another head. Seriously. It's a LOT less work. Buy everything you need for a timing belt job plus a head gasket, and you can swap them in an afternoon if you know what you're doing (or know someone who does). You wouldn't need to pull axles, transmission, align clutches, remove engine accessories or hunt down air tools and engine hoists. The best part is you won't have to clear the California emissions issues you would with a swap. NAPA has machine shops all over the US, and they charge about $150 for a 4-banger head reconditioning.

If your car is a CX, I've got one in my shed that needs a rebuild. Junkman (recycler) was going to give me $25 for it. Match that and pay shipping and it's yours.

If it's a DX, look around... there are tons of people who swapped engines that would be happy to part them out cheap.

If you want to swap, you will likely need a new exhaust, and will definitely need a new wiring harness, ECU, injectors, and all those timing belt parts I mentioned above. It's way more expensive to swap it than it is to fix it.

Ok I definately could do the head myself I know how to pull it its just the timiing process that I don't know but I have a manual for that. My current motor has 205,000 miles on it thats why i wanted to do the swap. Now I am thinking I will just get the same motor for it or do a head swap. I believe mine was a CX I am not really sure cause I got it second hand. The number on my block is D15B7 is that what yours is jafro? I may be interested in getting it off you as long as the cylinder head is good on it. Its to dark right now to see the casting number on the head itself so I will have to look tomoorrow and post again.

I am just tired of putting a quart or more of oil in it every three days LoL.

D15B7 is definitely the DX/CX engine.
