They take the whole axle, not the boot. The refurbish and resell them.

I wouldn't do that. I have heard that they just take those axles and put a new boot on them without inspecting them. I would rather buy a new OE part.

they don't really "buy" them...you can exchange your old ones with new ones and they will give you a discount.....they also come with a lifetime warranty which is good cause I went through like 4 sets with my hatch

Well I got the lower driverside ball joint replaced.
It cost $180 and that sucked since the part was only $41.

They also said I should replace the front pass. lower ball joint, pass. tie-rod, and both cv-boots before they tear. parts and labor was $650. I told him to forget it and ill try to tackle them myself.
Parts for all that was about $125.

Never done ball joint, tie-rod or replaced cv boots.
how hard are these. The car car sit for a while if need be. Its my Winter Beater.

Im not about to drop $650

really not that hard at all. CV shafts are 15 min job with the right tools. There is an excellent write up on here, i believe in the sticky about doin the CV's if you need a referance.

As far as the ball joints go, use the helms manual as a referance. More time consuming that anything.

You will probably need some power tools to complete the job effectively, unless you can be very patient and persistent. Other than that, its no problem. Just get a manual and you're good to go.

I changed out an entire half shaft in a meijer parking lot with minimal hand tools and a floor jack in like 30 minutes. It seriously isnt that hard. The biggest bitch will be the axle nut. After that its all gravy.
