Default Transmission noise, input shaft bearing? video included, please look

I'm sure some of you have seen this issue before. This is from my DX 2000 civic stock D16y7 and Stock transmission 5 speed manual D series. It is now at 144k miles.

So heres what it does, it makes a slight grinding clicky clacky noise when the transmission is spinning, the noise is very quiet when in neutral but when in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears it makes a nasty noise thats starting to just drive me insane, starting in 4th and 5th gear the noise starts to get quiet cuz of the high cruise speed noise helps cancle out the tranny noise. The noise goes away the instant I disenguage the transmission and engine, but as soon as I release the clutch again the noise comes right back. The noise likes to come and go, but a majority of the time, its doing it. It started about 7 or 8k miles ago, hasn't gotten any wores, hasn't gotten any better, but still making it's noise, and i'm getting sick of it. Maybe its time for a new transmission? I replaced my clutch back at 135k on jack stands, and I really dont feel like doing it again.

Heres the video, tell me what you guys think, the noise is a bit hard to hear from this video clip, I was recording and a friend was driving at the time while we were trying to figure out wtf is going on with the car, but if you want i can make another one which might provide more detail of the issue.

Here is a link to the video on youtube http://youtube.com/watch?v=3mFmeAWQ2iU
All help and suggestions would be very very greatly appricated

Thanks in advance

Have you checked your transmission oil level? I'm assuming you did change it with the clutch, right? One of the possibilities is the release bearing, mine ended up being the bearing on the drivers side at the axle (but I had 244k), it actually lost three of the balls. Still drove but sounded bad and of course only when the clutch was not pushed in.

well its not the axle because the noise only changes with engine speed, faster the engine spins, the faster the noise gets, like hearing get slown down when shifted to a higher gear and hearing the noise spool up again.

Edit: The tranny fluid is totally fine, I did actually drain it and put it back in, no metal particles found.

Most likely your input shaft bearing. There are some write-ups on honda-tech on how to replace it.

My car has been having this problem since I bought it in 2000. It hasn't caused any problems for me yet other than the annoying sound. I plan to fix it someday though...

The bearing I was referring to was on the differential where the axle goes into the differential.

I had that problem, thought that it was the throw-out bearing, it ended up being the catalyctic. Before you diagnose it check if you cat, exhaust and heatshield arent loose. If its the tranny through, do it before get some significant tranny damage.

I couldn't tell from the video. I had an input bearing go bad and it would rattle like a mofo when taking off and at certain speeds. If that's what it is here's a DIY that will help.

I'll make another video sometime today to post, hopefully it'll be an improvement over the other video I put up.

like someone already said check your exhaust first and if u cant diagnose crack open dat tranny!!!! if one of your bearings is bad replace them all and dont go thru the drama of having to open it every other week to replace bearings my moms 98 hx lost about 3 to four balls out of one of her bearings, of course check all your gears and syncros, resurface your flywheel!!!!! (a non-resurfaced flywheel will not be flat(of course) and will wear out your brand new beautiful clutch in no time) ummmmmmmm o yea check your trans axles because they are apart of you transmission too and i have a question for you... does your steering wheel vibrate? any ? send me a message and i will respond asap...

peace and love...

Try this, get the revs in 1st almost to the red line and then put the clutch in and leave it in first gear. Listen for noise, it may actually get a bit louder once you're moving a bit slower.

If you hear noise, move the shifter out of 1st and see if it goes away.

You can do the same with 2nd, unlikely you'll be able to hear anything in the taller gears.

If you hear something while doing that you know what you're hearing is a trans. bearing(s) issue, although not necessarily related to what you're asking about.
If you heard nothing while doing this (make sure it's as quiet as possible) than you know to look elsewhere than the trans. itself.

I've got a bit of noise on my car when I do that but not when taking off like you describe. I've found using synthetic 10w30 (as opposed to dino 10w30) has quieted it down a bit, though it took a while. Soon Honda MTF will be in there.
