Default Transmission questions

1. When replacing the clutch, is it also neccesary to replace the pressure plate and flywheel?

2. Is there a need to replace the Pilot bearing as well while in the process?

I have a 98 Civic ex with 93k miles

While the tranny is out:
you should:
resurface the flywheel (i haven't because mine is fine)
replace the plate and pilot bearing (usually come in the clutch kit)
possibly do the rear main seal (I should have last clutch job 350,000 miles)

Pressure plate yes, Flywheel, only if its heavly scored that machining wont fix. I would, most clutch kits come with the Pilot bearing. I would also replace the Rear main seal, since u will have the trans out its a good maintence thing to do.

when I replaced my clutch, the clutch kit I installed had pressure plate and clutch. I suggest you replace the flywheel. I did not, now I need to replace it since it's slipping again. I say replace everything while you're at it.

Beware. I think they are called transaxles, these are the rods that turn your wheels that connect to the differential, make sure you replace the washer or else the transmission/differential fluid will leak. That's what happen to mine. My Honda Maintenance book specifically said to replace them but it was too late when I read it. Good luck.

Are you refering to the drive axle itself and the rubber Input shaft seal?

Im running at 93k miles.. is it really necessary to replace the whole clutch at this time when there are no bad signs?

You dont have to replace the Axel Seals, What he is refering to is the Crush Washer on the Drain Plug. You should be fine.

It's not necessary to replace anything that is still good. But, since my Exedy OEM clutch only cost like $75 ?? and came with the clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bearing-why would you not replace them all? (Forgot about the throw out bearing in my first post).

In fact my entire clutch was still good when I removed it, I was swapping in a tranny, so it was just a "while I'm in there" thing.

You should not have to replace the flywheel, but you will only know when you see it.

The rear main seal shouldn't need to be replaced, but you should.

The axle seals should be fine, and that can be done later anyway.
