Default great tech info

i have heard different opinions of getting a d16 (94 civic ex) crank polished, or ground. i do not see anything wrong with getting polished, but mine has wear and needs to be cut. i have heard conflicting arguments of getting a new crank, or just getting it done. it needs to be ground .03 or .75mm. i know they make the bearing kits in these sizes, and i dont think they would if it couldnt be done, but i wonder just how much integrity will be lost, and how long i can expect it to last. i do not race !!! at least not often anyways... got an automatic for crying out loud.
i am considering rebuilding the block, or just getting another whole motor. cost is relatively the same once all seals and machine work has been paid for, and new pistons too. also have the jdm d15 vtec 130 hp lower end (spun bearing, so i am sure it will need machining too. opinions are welcome, but true knowledge is honored. should i machine and rebuild, or better to motor swap and sell parts to reclaim some of my losses.
i want an all motor setup. what pistons should i use and what compression ratio is the highest i can run on mid grade 91 (most of the time)and high octane 93 (whenever i can afford it) to get max performance without spark knock. more than likely will be a d16z6 setup.
finally, do you recommend the jdm or the usdm auto tranny. i am not sure what gear ratios they have..5 SPEED IS OUT OF THE QUESTION...PLEASE DON'T RECOMMEND IT. I LIKE HAVING A CLEAN DRIVING RECORD FOR A CHANGE. THANK YOU

:hs: Enjoy your gas milage and don't build up a N/A Automatic D....Your driving record will be kept clean and you'll have money.

Drop it, put some decent rims on it, and enjoy...That's the only thing you can do with an Automatic D :hs:

i am not saying that i will never put a 5 speed in it. but i dont want to be tempted to run while in the process of building. once i get it modified to my satisfaction and then properly tuned, then i will drop a 5 speed in it. i do have some mods already, but i still have a lot to get. once i get the all motor setup i am looking for, then i will look into getting it supercharged. any idiot can get a stock motor and add a $900 BOLT ON turbo kit and boost up to 9 pounds safe. anyone that has a little more sense than an idiot knows that they have to do some internal work first, then they will be able to boost 10-17 lbs. and if they really know their shit, i am sure they can build a bullet proof bottom end put serious cash into a good head job and boost 18-25 pounds. and if they feel froggy i am sure they will add nos to the mix. i am also thinking of adding nos just before i supercharge, but i want to build the internals first. i am actually amazed by the numer of idiots, who get a bolt on kit, try to boost 17 pounds on a bone stock motor and wonder wtf just happened while they are waiting for triple A to tow them to the nearest garage. only to end up doing the same thing time and time again. good money after bad, but i know that if i throw in a 5 speed now (which i have one waiting to go in, but i also have two automatics: want to use the automatic so that i will be less tempted to run.. i mean seriously why risk a ticket for a near stock car), all i want to be able to do is add the mods as i can afford them and be able to drive it and get a basic idea as to what else needs to be done, and when it is close, drop the 5 speed with lsd and show these young guys what building motors are all about.

there is nothing wrong with an N/A car. i loved my high 11 second mustang on pump gas. only invested $9,000 and most of that included getting the car. i see way more turd-bowed civics wishing to hit the 13 sec mark and already have close to 15g in it. i want to see what my knowledge of N/A domestics can do, if you properly build an all motor civic. and if push comes to shove, yank the head and the oil pan and swap out the pistons and slap a turbo on. some people actually like to build motors. but there are alot of rich kids who take it to a shop and pay to play, and in most cases are too good to change their oil, but still take all the credit for the work others did. if my N/A civic build is a bust, then i will sell the parts i dont need and turbo it, and then see how far that gets me. but yes a 5 speed is in the option list, but not anytime in the future. like i said i just want the best auto tranny so that i can benchmark what i have, and not be tempted to add unnecessary wear to the motor. i see no point of putting in all that time, effort and money to get the performance of the motor where i want it, then swap the tranny only to be able to enjoy it a few months before it has to be rebuilt again. needless to say, even if i could avoid the urge not dog the ever loving shyt out of it, why wear the tranny and keep replacing clutches and throw out bearings. but then again what do i know.

i have only been building motors for 11 years. i know alot about the domestics, but as far as the imports go, i still seek knowledge which is why i am on this forum. if i knew the crank would hold i would just turn it and slap some oversize bearings on it. but since this is the 2nd time i have yanked a motor since owning it in february of 06, (bought it with blown pistons, threw in a jdm 1.5 vtec that lasted all of 45 days before spinning a bearing... 45k miles my azz) but as of right now funds are limited and it is my only car. so i am looking cost effectiveness and back on road time. even as a highly modded car, more than likely it will be my daily driver for a while.

for the next step i am looking into injectors, fuel pump, msd ignition and coil, performance dizzy. but what i do know that most people take for granted, is that you build the motor from the inside out. not just becuase when ya take of your new chrome pieces ya risk scratching them, but also the more you remove stuff, the more you risk breaking or forgetting something else. not to mention the number of gaskets you will have to replace. i mean why buy a motor, drop a larger head (new head gasket) then turn around and remove the head to have it ported and polished, to re-install (new head gasket) then turn right back around to swap pistons, so you again yank the head (new head gasket) then realize you should have replaced the rod and main bearings, but didnt cuz you didnt have the cash (guess it went to all those new head gaskets) so now that you have shattered your bearings, you gotta yank the head and then get machine work, if the block is salvageable, and then get yet another head gasket when you put it all back together. and for the record there is/was a grunt in the club that did that. i am not affiliated with a club, but i have known the president of it for years. i am off to serve overseas soon (gotta love the military) so i dont want to waste their time being sworn in as a grunt when someone else can take the position. i couldnt do it earlier becuase i had a jacked up yota and before that cavaliers, which succeeded an 87 fiero gt and and 89 mustang gt. and two trucks with built 350's in them and a 77 gmc sierra grande with a 454. so i kinda dont fit into the whole import thing a few months back. but since most of them are young bucks who cant keep a car together and think that a map sensor is an interior light used on road trips, the info they give me heard, taken into consideration, but no action is taken until i can get verification of what they say. so i am hoping to talk to a honda tech or a veteran who has learned from there mistakes and knows why they failed. not alot of, ummmmmmm maybe it was........hell i dont know, maybe you need to put helium in your tires to make your car lighter. i am looking for intelligent people with experience to help in my quest for a 12 second N/A car (which has been done, seen it at a local nopi event, but never did get the chance to meet the driver so i could ask him questions) your help is appreciated, but i can do without the sarcasm and smart ass remarks and cynacism. i just want my questions answered, and i am sure that if they are, alot of people will benefit from this post, mainly because i have yet to find anyone local who can provide specs. whether it be mechanics, honda parts personnel, canadian motor distributors, local performance shops etc. all they know is.. yep it is a jdm 1.5 vtec. 130 HP to the fly. (actually incorrect, more like 125) but have no idea the cc size, which heads swap, what pistons to use, which acura parts you can rob, what is the best computer. so i am hoping somewhere on this vast website i can find people who can answer these questions i have. i have looked on many posts and still have yet to find answers. so now i am directly asking. from the majority of the posts i have read, the ones with the most replies usually are argument based. the ones with real questions are usually avoided. but for some reason people love to comment on how stupid others are, or how inferior d series motors are, or just like to ball bash the ones that do try to help. all i want is to be pointed in the right direction. thanks again

to answer the question of the 5 speed and what it has to do with my driving record... when i did own very fast cars, i raced anyone who wanted some (this was before evasion was a felony and way before the movie fast and the furious when suddenly all these knuckleheads come out of the woodwork and drive fast with no skill) since the influx of these wanna be racers, the police have started cracking down on roadraces (used to be able to race at the beach and get off with warnings, but not always)... but since i did race alot, vettes, cobras, saleens, rx-7's, ss camaros, built old school muscle cars etc. at least 5 nights a week for about 8 months straight. well long story short, after investing over $200,000 to keep my driving rights, and no telling how many days missed from work for court appearances. i like speed, i like adrenaline. i love to drive fast. since i racked up 24 tickets in less than 5 weeks, i went to a slower 45 banger motor and jacked up trucks that wouldnt tempt me to race. 5 years is a long time to wait for a clean record. not to mention that with all those tickets i was paying over $700 per month for liability insurance on an sr-22 for my mustang.. that was the cheapest rate i could find, and 95% of insurance companies wouldnt insure me. i think i have grown wiser and decided to only try to race on tracks at scheduled events, but then again... there isnt any traffic to test your skills there. and i am way too poverished to get sponsored for short track circle racing, nor can i aford my own nascar team. and believe me i have tried. ricky rudd is local and we used to get alot of parts from his dads junkyard, and i tried everytime to get connected into high speed motorsports. so i have to settle for what i can get. so with an automatic i am less prone to racing, one, since it isnt any fun, two it isnt challenging, and three, they just arent meant for racing. and i hope by the time i get the motor built and drop the 5 speed i will have picked up some more sponsors and i wont be allowed to race.... losing a sponsor for street racing is a hard blow. and it carries with you. my buddy lost 4 main sponsors for racing, and now he cant get anyone to take him on. the closest legal track here is over a 2 hour drive and it is only 1/8 mile. now tell me.... how fun does that sound. fricken roller coasters have vertical climbs higher than that. and yes theme parks are part of my adrenaline rush. there is one 45 minutes from here and another about 2 hours from here and one 3 hours from here. and the best part.... no cops in the park. and that my friend is how a 5 speed factors into the equation.

Wow, a lot of reading with no regards to usage of paragraphs and capitalization.

On other note, an N/A Automatic D is still worthless to build up because it would cost to much to do so. It's either turbo or swap with those engines. Automatic Honda transmissions don't hold either :hs:

Suggestion, control your urges and just get a 5 speed and turbo/ or swap if you want it a tad quicker.

I don't see the point of bulding your car up with an AT then driving it, THEN switching to a 5-speed.

Not only would it make it more complicated tuning-wise, but it would be a big inconvenience to have to take parts of the engine apart in which you could have already had apart the first time you were modifying it.

I have a 5-speed D16z6 and i can drive like a grandma all day long.

Just control yourself and you wont find yourself drifting through instersections at 2am ..

why wear the tranny and keep replacing clutches and throw out bearings
EDIT: Also my clutch supposedly lasted the whole life of my car until it was changed out in 2002, its a 93 with 260,000ish miles, the idea was the older man and woman that had it before me, drove it SLOW. You can do this too my lacking in pressure applied to the pedal that actuates gas flow, QUITE a simple process mind you!

And i'm sorry you had a mustang

your missing the main point. i dont want to build a turbo car.
i fail to see how an auto will make it harder to tune. i go into the military in a few weeks, so i will probably build an all motor and a turbo setup. get them both dynoed and see which one to build in the future. since i have 3 differnt blocks and cranks. i may even end up doing a swap, depends on how the mood strikes me. but for now. automatic non turbo.

i see everyone is dying to tell me to go 5 speed and to keep foot off gas and to turbo. but noone is touching the machine questions i am asking. that is the whole point of the post, forum, whatever you want to call it. i have 3 different blocks with 3 different cranks. and no specs on the cylinder head for a jdm. nor the block specs. is it 207 like all other d15 or is it 212 like the d16, or is it somewhere in the middle.
