Default Smokage! Smoke & Go Go Gadget Smoke machine!

hey guys,

Fresh Motor + Moly rings = how long to seal up?

ok when i'm on the gas throttle, i have no smoke & car pulls great at 4lbs of boost.

when i let off the throttle & the engine is winding down, still no smoke.

when i go to get back on the gas pedal the car puff's a big cloud of smoke out of the exhaust from the time it takes to go from -20lbs of vacume pressure to 0lbs of vacume pressure & then it stops smoking when i'm back on the throttle.

it will also smoke while sitting at idle.

I just wanted to make sure that this was normal for a freshly built motor with all forged internals & very solid rings??

someone let me kno whats up coz i'm paranoid. I've probably got about 700miles on the engine now.

(a friend told me " with those rings, your probly lookin at a few thousand miles to get them to seal")

any info from you fellow motor builders is appreciated. Once again.. NOT STOCK rings.

What up bro. Yea you prolly just need to work the seal in and break that new engine in. Put some miles on it just dont beat the bitch up yet. Do some regular driving no speed shit and give it 1000-1400 miles. If its still bustin smoke then id take the head off and see if theres some visible problems in the cylinders. Like scrathches oil build up. Also i hope your using synthetic oil in that new engine. But any ways give it 1400 to 1500 miles max if it keeps smoking look at the cylinders. Or take it to a trusted mechanic and have his ass check it out after 1500 miles. Hope your shit runs good man, as of me i have a beautiful 95 civic ex i just bought for 1000 bux and the ****ing water pump goes right wen im ****ing broke. Great now im taking the bus till payday....................

Doesn't sound normal to me. Rings should seal within 5 minutes of the initial startup. I just rerung my engine and haven't had any smoke what so ever. I don't know how much thicker/stronger those rings are from stock but they make take longer or may not even seal up completely. Give it a few hundred more miles and if they haven't sealed, I would replace them with OEM rings.

I have JE rings. I ran 30w dino oil through mine when I broke it in. I changed the oil at 50 and then every 250 miles for the first 800 miles. Now I'm running 30w Mobil 1 and it's sealed up tight. The only smoke I'm getting is fuel smoke from pulled timing at 20+ PSI. It's good (and a hell of a lot cheaper) to break your motor in with non-synthetic because friction is needed for your rings to seat quickly.

It could be a valve seal that's giving you trouble. What do your plugs look like?

the ring doesnt seal by its own preasure, but rather from the preasure of the combustion. the combustion will push the ring against the cylinder wall. the harder you push the motor, the harder the ring is pushed against the wall. Rings are made of a steal that once heated too many times, will become harder than the cross thatch, then guess what, it will wear the cross thatch and wont break in properly. Break your motor in with the first 20 miles, smartest way to do it.

i've been runnin the thing up to about 6000rpm's at bout half throttle (sometimes a little bit more) & i'm only puttin 4lbs of boost to it right now coz i was going to wait for it to break in b4 i crank up my boost.

I've been running non-synthetic oil so that it seals up quicker

I've done months of research on this & i've pretty much followed the break in process from the online sticky here.
