The only time a mini-me is worth it, IMO, is when you have a spare VTEC head lying around with all the parts.
the head swaps give you slightly higher compression numbers, so I'd do that vs. swaping the whole motor

Find a D16Z6 online for 500$, and get a different size head gasket, or pistons... And you got higher or lower compression..

Also, if you swap in a Z6 motor, I am guessing its going to have fewer miles than your motor has. oposed to just swaping the head, you are going to get more out of a total engine swap, for the same price of a head swap..

P.S. Somewhat of a relation to the topic, but, when my head cracked on my H23, it was cheaper to import a motor, and swap the entire motor than to replace the head.

z6 is the 5th gen ex. y8/y7/y5 are all 6th gen engines...

and other than vtec, intake/exhaust manifolds and a few minor things, there's little to no difference between the y7 and y8, so the head swap would be just fine.

you need to change the ecu as well, the same as the head you get, be it a z6 or a y8

No, you don't... You need to stick with an ECU that can be programmed, which at this point is going to be an OBD1 ECU. If your car is OBD1, then stick with a P28 or P72 ECU. If it's OBD2, then use something like a P2P. But for love of pete, just stop insisting on using OBD2 ECU's just because the engine was in an OBD2 car, that it needs to be treated as such.

Who cares, if you buy a motor, just use what you have. If it works then why change it?

P.S. a 94 D16Z6 uses OBD-?
