Feel free to correct me, but if a Civic is so weak...
yeah, I have a delsol, and it's the same thing, they may not be the fastest thing around, but between reliability, gas mileage, and massive amounts of potential/support/user base... there arent a whole lot of other choices that measure up for anybody that wants a somewhat cheap, reliable daily driver that they can "trick out" and even make fast if they put some good cash into it.
and yeah jafro, those DSM motors are pretty slick, but there's no way you're gonna only put $1k into a galant or any laser, including the donor car and any maintanence it needs, (a $500 DSM always needs something, and god knows DSMs need their fair share of extra maintanence, especially when modded) and have it run even high twelves. I dont care if the galant is AWD or not, a stock turbo, cranking the boost, and a bunch of free mods, and maybe an intake and a good flowing exhaust you'll hit 13.5 with good tires (that's if it's manual, if it's automatic... forget about it, smaller cams, injectors, and a lame 13g turbo) they run 14.9 stock... in good shape, lol. I will give it to DSMs though, they handle good, and they're great for straight line performance relatively cheap... they just cost you alot more in reliability in the long run, not to mention insurance costs lol
oh and one more thing... the comment about the 6 cylider mustangs... depends on what year you're talking about, the 94-98 body style did 16.9-17.1 automatic 6cylinder, and 5 speed did about 16.7 with a good driver. as far as the body style after that, I'm pretty sure they were just low 16's. but still, a stock non-vtec civic would get spanked by one, although I've put a beatin on quite a few of them with my stock SOHC vtec delsol.

Meh... You should see my current project. Check out my website (sig). I found another Mirage/Colt hatchback chassis. I have $1300 in on it (total between BOTH the donor and the recipient chassiseseses and parts) and it's going to run low 12's spinning tires through the whole 1/4 mile, guaranteed. Probably traction limited to an 11.8 at 116-118 mph on a really good day because it's going to be FWD. It will weigh 2050lbs complete, and I'll be pushing 350whp on a used big16g that I have laying around (freebie) and an otherwise-stock bottom end. The motor mounts to make it work were $20 from a Hyundai Elantra, and every part is OEM Mitsubishi except the IC pipes which I'm making myself.
My insurance will actually drop $6/mo when I add it to my insurance because of a multi-car discount and also the fact that the car probably has a negative book value (yellow 1991 Dodge Colt GL automatic). ... and it won't handle well unless I get a GVR-4 hub/knuckle/brake assembly/suspension.
Now if I can just find the time to throw this $80 full engine seal kit in the motor, I'd get around to installing the engine... but GF probs, 2 jobs, house hunting, and maintaining my sanity are sort of blocking me from finishing it right now. There are other people that have done this swap so I'm no pioneer or anything, but it should be a lot of fun and that's what it's all about.
I have to give you credit. You are familiar with DSMs and it sounds to me like you have some racing experience... either in the stands paying attention, or on the track getting to know your competition. I can appreciate that. Best of luck with the Sol.

i want in on all this "one-year old thread" action....lol the civic is a great platform car. you want your civic to be show worthy? go buy some parts...slap them on. wnat your civic to handle? go buy some parts...slap them on. wnat your civic for speed? go buy some parts...slap them on.
what i am saying is this....it is a great platform car. try getting your renault/metro/neon to do what the civic has done "before". "before" equals.....before evryone hopped on the bandwagon afetr fast and furious.
now there are an abundance of performance parts for any car....including camry....trucks....etc.
civics are slow with no mods....but they do very well stock in autocrossing.
autocrossing is for fast drivers.....drag racing is for fast cars.
go ahead and mod your alero.......try to find parts...good luck.
civic is a great platform for whatever your trying to build...hands down

I apologize guys, I hadnt slept in about two days (I really need to stop reading about turbo setups for my car and work on getting a normal sleep schedule again lol) and when I read "2-20-05" for some reason my mind thought "hey today's the 22, I'll leave a message" haha, idiot.
and thanks jafro, a few of my friends have had cars faster than I'll ever hope to own, since long before I was driving, so I have my fair share of track experience, and alot more experience watching bench racing idiots argue when they know next to nothing. you learn a thing or two after about 6-7 years of that lol. and I've heard about that colt swap.... bad ass man, I'm all for anything that is unique and fast, I bet nobody will even see that comin out of that colt :-P
