Congrats, you're wrong.

VTEC-E is an economy system. It literally "turns off" one intake valve per cylinder at low RPM's to save gas, the valve opens only enough to prevent fuel from pooling on the deactivated valve. It was introduced in the '92 Civic VX on the D15Z1 engine.

It's VTEC-Economy.

Actually I think we both may be right. The Haynes Manual for my car says that VTEC-E is Honda's designation for "enhanced performance."

However, I did some research and found this site. I quote, "The two engines are essentially the same except for the VTEC-E in the Civic HX. But the Civic HX's VTEC-E mechanism results in 115hp, versus 106hp from the Civic DX. So the Civic HX has more power in addition to better fuel economy. But make no mistake, VTEC-E is designed with economy as the primary goal, not power output."

Draw.

first of all, haynes manuals have errors. off the top of my head, it mis-codes the D16y8 and is wrong for the hp...i think it states the y7 is in the EX. 2nd, its SRS schematics and locations of parts is off. they are merely reference, not the law.

2nd, the d series are ALL basically the same, just minute intake/fuel/cam changes and tuning (for ease of stating a point) the d16y8 (only in the EX) is 127 hp SOHC Vtec

However the original VTEC-E lagged 10 horsepower behind the DX.

D15B7 (SOHC): 102hp
D15Z1 (SOHC VTEC-E): 92hp.

I would like to know what it is about the later VTEC-E that gives it a boost in output though.

My guess is that honda took different approaches to fuel economy....previously it was less power AND vtec= better economy, whereas you can peak more power on demand w/ the newer, but they use the same technology to cut back under less throttle.
