Black smoke could be a lot of things. like a bad head gasket, or just an old engine. Are you burning oil?

Um, the TPS definately could make the car run rich. The throttle position sensor tells the ECU how open the throttle is. If it isn't sending the correct voltage to the ECU at any certain point, than the amount of fuel being injected will not be correct.
DEFINATELY replace/fix the TPS and I bet that you won't be running rich anymore.

Oil is blue tinted smoke, if it was the headgasket, he'd be burning coolant, and that'd be white tinted. extra gas is black smoke.

I what color smokes typically mean head gasket etc. But, I have seen exceptions. When my cousins old D16Z6 was losing coolant the smoke was black, not blue or white. Also even though his head gasket was going, there was no coolant in the oil or bubbles in the coolant.
