Default JDM D15 -vs- USDM D16Z6

i have a choice on which motor to get and i was wondering which i should get. Now i know you all want me to get the DOHC....but cant afford it. anyways i was wondering if you guys had ever heard any horror stories of either of these motors. i recently threw a rod and would like to know which motor can out perform the other not only in HP but longevity. anyway let me know cause im pickin up the motor next friday. thanks guys.

umm their both comparable in price, i think the Z6 makes like 2 more hp and more torque, but u could get the d15 with an LSD tranny. a Z6 will be easier and cheaper to come by and probably easier to mod and work on. or also id consider a Y8, ud get one with lower miles, and still a cheap price.

I agree, except for the easier to work on part...I can't imagine there'd be a whole lot of difference. But, the Z6 is probably easier to find parts (aftermarket and OEM) for. I paid $300 for mine with no tranny and less than 70k miles on it.

the ZC and the Z6 are gonna be the same price for me to purchase. i know the heads on these motors are the same so replacement parts will be no problem as far as plugs and wires and stuff like that. and also my D15B7 manifolds will bolt right up to the JDM D15. I'm doing this swap on a budget. i will be replacing the necessities like clutch, timing belt etc.... and my fly wheel will also fit. And as for the Y8 its still alittle to expensive cause its still a new motor on the market. but im still trying to figure out which motor is ultimately the strongest overall.

Her we go with the LSD tranny on the D series again. what misinformation. The D16Z6 is much less hassle. The 130HP version of the D15B is a Z6 head on a VX block.

Well, I should clarify. Do you have an EX or DX/LX now that you blew the rod in? Are you getting a long block or full changeover. If you get a longblock and use items such as the Z6 IM, etc, there will be some small issues. But why have issues at all when you can have no issues. The deal is that there are thousands of parts for the Z6 block and very little for the D15B (VX) block. It all depends on where you want to go with this engine. But price wise the D15B can be had for a lot cheaper with lower miles but just make sure you get the right d15B because there are 90HP VTEC-E versions of that motor with the same D15B block stamp. There are also variations in valve covers which determine the years, etc. Ideally you want the dual stage 130HP version or the regular VTEC 130HP version. But I think the dual stage VTEC motors are newer. Oh, and despite many rumors there are no MANUAL tranny LSD equipped D series.

i have the 95 HB DX model and as far as the motor that blew it was the D15B7 and it was the #1 rod and it blew out at both sides of the motor. and what is included in the swap is the motor, tranny and distributor. oilpan to the valve cover. all this plus a start up warranty for around $825.00. the ecu will run me about $175.00. but i was told i can run my stock ecu with this motor but will be without VTEC. if anybody knows of a link to someone who has done this exact motor swap please let me know ive searched and found nothing. and this JDM motor came out of a VTi model from the land of the rising sun.

$825.00 is a lot. I got a JDM D15B 130HP version off the net for $350.00 (midas motors or something on ebay) and then we bought a 2000 EX tranny for $200.00 locally. We used the P28 ECU, axles, and harness from his old EX motor. You can use a P28 if it's the 130HP VTEC version of the D15B. $175.00 for a used ECU? That's crazy. Also, your DX axles may be too weak. I would buy a full changeover. $850.00 would be an okay price for a full D16Z6 changeover.
