Ask the dealer for the maintenance history of the car. You will need the VIN. I just bought a 97 DX HB and found out that the privous owner just changed the waterpump and timing belt, saved me a lot of $$. Also ask if there are any outstanding recalls. Some are performed free.

Cost $0.00
Knowledge of the prvious maintenance, Priceless!!

Intake, exhaust, hedder, n2o, all the tune up maintenance all adds up to cost more then a swap. I'd swap or leave it. If you leave it, you aren't going to get any extra horsepower.

Ok, I think you have all said enough, I will do a swap with my Tax refund, how much will it cost me? All I want is a nice engine that will put out over 200hp that I can just swap out for my engine I have now. I was thinkin an H22A the 2.2VTEC or 2.3 DOHC Or should I go with somthing else? I dont want to have to swap anything else, I want to keep the tranny and just a straight swap. What do you think?

your only hope for 200+ hp out of the box would be an h22a. The best JDM one makes 220 crank hp, which shoud mean roughly 190 to the wheels. The more common US one makes 180-200 crank hp, so figure 160-175 to the wheels.

If youre willing to build, you can get similar numbers out of a b18c or cr-vtec, but you'll end up spending way more.

:edit: The H22a swap runs around $2200, plus about $500 in mount kits and extra parts. The 220hp JDM h22a will be a bit more.

Oh I already know the 3 owners that had the car befor me. The first person bought it in 93 and had it for a while and didnt replace anything just did the general maint., the second owner put all of the miles on it she drove it to work and back 60mi a day. The third owner (keep in mind all of these owners are in the same family) had it for 5 months and only put 1000 miles on it and then sold it to me. He did an engine flush and fuel flush when he got the car.

So that is my best bet. I think ill try to find an H22 at a Wrecking Yard. Rebuild it and put it in..... With the H22 I can use the same tranny and axels?

no. you'll need the h-series tranny, cable shifter, a HASport or Place racing mount kit and custom axles, ECU and a bunch of other garbage. PM h22avid for the full list. This isn't your average "toss it in" swap.

:edit: I would highly reccomend buying the "full swap" option from an online seller like Hmotorsonline.com or total-boost. It will come with most of that crap, so all you'll have to worry about is the mounts and axles.

Well thats what I want is just to be able to do a toss in swap, what will I need? Would the B18C be as costly??

If you want a no-fuss swap, you'll need a b-series. Even so, you'll still need the transmission, axles, ecu, mounts, shift linkages, etc... but they're all OEM parts, so its easier to get them at a junkyard or whatever.

The B18c swap is actually a little more than the H22, believe it or not. Just more in-demand, I guess. A full swap (including all the parts you need) usually runs around $3200. The plus side, is you'll be able to do this yourself in a weekend. A stock B18c will only put out 150-160ish to the wheels. The downside to the B-series motors is, unless you build a serious B20vtec, you're not going to be able to produce the torque of the H-series. The plus side, of course, is that the B weighs significantly less than the H.
