I never really worried about using special oil in my Civic.. Just bought the deals... 5 quarts of Penzoil with a Fram filter. I changed it at exactly 3000 miles, because I drove the shit out of that car, and put a lot of miles monthly on it. I noticed that oil broke down a lot, and when I changed it, it was always thin, but it was still some what clean.

I'm going to run only Amsoil in my GSR. I have a buddy who's a dealer, and got me a case of gallon jugs, so 4 gallons at his cost. I changed the oil the other day, and used a Wix filter.

I have oil for the next 25,000 or so miles... Now if I can just find a case of Wix filters for cheap..

its pretty well known in the evo community, that given the same oil rating and weight, that some oil brands make more power during dyno testing...same car same day same hour etc. dont actually have any hard data at work, but a good evo friend has his own shop/dyno, and he's seen it all.

it was kind of disappointing to see Redline and Mobil 1 fare pretty low compared to other brands. However, Royal Purple and Eneos rate at the top as far as hp and tq output goes.

as far as actual protection and lubricity factors go, thats another ball game..
It's just been bread into me from all the people who I grew up with and taught me about cars, I have heard lots of negative things about certain brands and very few negative things about others from first hand engine builders etc. So is it a factual statement above, not that I can prove. More just an overstated personal opinion Royal Purple FTW h:

I use $1/quart COASTAL oil. I even buy $8/gallon walmart grade oil. I feel as long as you get the right GRADE for your weather; CLEAN OIL is better than any dirty oil.

Think about it! That dirty oil shoots up onto your camshaft lobes and journals. then your crank bearings being dipped in it. If its dirty your going to wear out the bearings faster.

CLEAN OIL is better than any company dirty oil. If it looks clean your pretty much ok!
