Once any helmet, SA or M rated, takes a hit [even dropping accidently from waist level to the ground], it should be replaced, though some places like Bell will X-Ray helmets to check for a safety compromise.

I agree. the helmet should be replaced if dropped, etc.

But I do believe M helmets are lighter than most SA helmets? or am I wrong again? This is what I've been told by the "old timers."

Yes my SA helmet was way heavier than my M helmet. Plus my M helmet feels cooler in the summer time.

Yes, M helmets are typically made of lighter weight materials, which make sense because on a bike you don't have any support since you need to be able to move your head around extensively, but again, neither are really better for multiple impacts than the other. A good helmet is only required to stop one good hit and hold together long enough for you to get medical attention.

I thought SA was tested for roll cage impact and M wasn't?

No, they're just usually have a thicker shell [for roll cage interaction and better ability to hold shape, etc] and have fire retardant linings.
