New Class for SCCA RMD
I went to an SCCA meeting last night, and they're trying to get the backing to put together a new road racing class called ST (super tuners
h: ). Its basically like SM only for road racing, but the whole purpose is to have a very diverse class of cars... pretty much anything goes.
The basic rules are:
all suspension pickup points must remain stock
tires/wheels can't extend beyond OEM fender
8 pt welded cage (because these cars have VERY high speed potental)
no hoosiers
no stroker cranks
3.2l displacement limit
ANYTHING else goes... any suspension any kinda motor or turbo... remote resevoirs, built motors running rediculous boost, you name it... its all allowed.
Theres a complex system of balasts and restrictor plates based on weight and engine displacement. The class is designed for turbo cars, but you're allowed to compete with an NA if you chose to. The whole point of this is to keep the cars competitive even though they're widely varied (for instance you could have a honda vs. S4 vs. Supra vs. EVO etc..)
A close look at the rules suggests a honda could be very competitive in this class because the displacement restrictions are more stringent than the weight ones, and the balasts can be added anywhere on the car (except for penalty balasts for winning too much, which have to be placed on passenger floor).
And for the fun of it, they brought in an IT rx7 for us to look at (so we know what kind of prep level to expect), and they threw it on they dyno for shits and giggles. Made 163hp and 121tq which isn't bad for a NA 13b at over a mile elevation.
They're hoping to start it up by fall and have a full season for this class next year. Its too bad I really don't have the budget for it, because I think my little hatch could be pretty competitive in this class. Maybe in a couple years tho :happysad: I NEED MONEY!

we don't have it here :dunno:
Its def not gonna be a national thing. The rules would be impossible to enforce because of the variety of cars. This whole thing actually developed from people talking on local web boards, and some of the RMD guys picked up on it and helped it develop. Two of my Saab buddies are already planing on joining up. Hopefully I'll be able to play too in a year or two :rick:
