is it worth it?
Would turning my 99 Si into an autocross/roadcourse car be a good idea, could i be competive or will i get stomped on by all the rwd cars. Do you guys that can really drive (CivicRacerExR etc) ever beat rwd cars? im from a land where everyone thinks rwd cars are god and fwd cars are shit any help would be great. thanks guys
I know locally the car is great. I've taken 1st in my region for the past 3 years and other regions too.
I think the potential is there, it's just that no one has taken the time and patience to try it. My car is almost there - just need to shed another 100-200lbs. I know on some longer courses I do catch up to some of the faster cars in STS because of the high redline our cars have. But on slow and slippery courses I start to fall behind due to no torque.
Right now my car is down to 2500lbs and I still have: A/C, power steering, pretty heavy wheels, stock seats, stereo, and stock battery. I figured with all those mods done (about 120-150lbs deleted) plus a reflash of the ECU or VTEC controller it will be there.
Taken me 4 years to build the car, but also remember autocross is more driver than car UP TO A POINT.

local will be no problem. on a national level you might run into problems though. although if you looked at past years national results, 88-95 civic hatches always seem to do really well in SM. for STS or DSP i see a 99-00 si being a bit on the heavy side with not enough tq. to really be competetitive. again this is on a national level and if you are only concerned with local and having fun(which its all about having fun anyway) i say go for it.
i built my car into a class that id stand no chance at all(DMOD) on a national level, but im still able to be competitive in my local clubs. it wont bother me because i built my car to have fun with, not for the intention of winning a trophy. thats what to keep in mind

I think civics have great competitive potential (especially 4th gens, but 5th and 6th too). Just about the most competitive STS car around is the 88-91 Si (111hp, i think, but also about 2000 lbs even). With appropriate upgrades, (and as mike and germ already mentioned, weight reduction) you should have no problem if your driving skills are up to the task.
