I think civics have great competitive potential (especially 4th gens, but 5th and 6th too). Just about the most competitive STS car around is the 88-91 Si (111hp, i think, but also about 2000 lbs even). With appropriate upgrades, (and as mike and germ already mentioned, weight reduction) you should have no problem if your driving skills are up to the task.
