They room was $25/3=$8.33. The bell boy stole $2 so now the room is $27. Each is given back $1. So they paid $9 each, but it's really $9.33, because each of them was suppose to get $1.66 back

They originally paid 10 each:
10 X 3 = 30
They got 1 back each
30 - 3 = 27
27/3 = 9, it's that simple.
And if you're trying to calculate what the bellboy too, you subtract it from the 27, so it's:
27 - 2 = 25
25/3 = 8.33

therefore, it's 10 - 1(their refund) - .66 (money that the bellboy kept)= 8.33
You're just not calculating it right. It's as simple as (30-3)/3=9
