the dollar they got back is already calculated in the equation. they were supposed to get back 5 total, 5/3=1.66. They got back 1 each, and .66 went to the bellboy.

therefore, it's 10 - 1(their refund) - .66 (money that the bellboy kept)= 8.33

You're just not calculating it right. It's as simple as (30-3)/3=9
