I like the xbox better.
PS2 has more game's though, albeit not a lot of quality title's but more selection.
I have both, and if I had to choose I wouldn't get either, cuz when the other console has a game I want a can't get it I'd be pissed.

i'd say xbox. my friend got some software that loads linux on to the hard drive, boots into a linux shell, connects to ftps and he's able to download xbox games directly to the hard drive, and play 'em for free.
but the ps2 has GT3, and GT4 when it's released.
I'd just get both they are pretty cheap, xbox is a better machine though.

xbox.
1- True hardware potential hasn't been reached yet. We have a PS2 and a 'box in the apartment, and the xbox wins on every cross-platform game hands down.
2- Easily upgradeable to a linux system, as mentioned before. If you're comfortable modding it, its much easier to swap in the mod chip for burned games and DVD's. I have an 80 GB hard drive about to go into my xbox as well.
3- Not pre-loaded for DVD play, but plugs right into any network for x-live or direct 2-box play. I've personally had a 16-player halo game going at the frat house, and all the extra material required were ethernet cords and people to play.
4- DVD kit is cheap, and you get a remote too... i dont see it as a big deal...
You only suffer in the decent-game selection department... but I'm sure it'll get better in time. My ps2-owning roommate already plays my xbox much more often, but... i do wish i had the .hack series..

it's a tough call ... but if all games were released on all systems, the Xbox does have superior graphics, sound, loading times, and on point controls. look at soul calibur II ... it really puts the GC and PS2 versions to shame.
if all games were exclusive and games would only appear on 1 system ... i'd go for the GC. there's nothing like those nintendo exclusive titles like Mario Sunshine, Metroid, and Zelda.
but ... i'd have to say PS2. they have the right blend of 3rd party and exclusive titles. (Madden, GTA, GT, Final Fantasy) they don't have the best controller (GC), but it's damn good enough (much better than the Xbox's). their graphics aren't as smooth as the Xbox, but it can definately hold it's own. the PS2 is just a really balanced machine.

great point.
If you do decide to go XBOX, make sure you get the "controller S"... its SOOOOO much better than the fatty, and pretty close to the competitor's
