Default windows xp problem...HELP!!!!!

my windows machine has gotten slow to respond lately. when you are typing, there is a lag between hitting the keys & the letter showing on the screen of about 1-2 seconds & i don't type so fast that it can't keep up. also, things that i click are slow to open.

i have a 1.6 p4 w/ 512mb ddr ram laptop & only my anti-virus running in the background, so i know it's not a resources problem.

somebody told me it was a problem with one of the windows update patches but wasn't sure which. it supposedly is the OS waiting for something that causes it to do this.

it did this once before & it got so bad i did a reinstall & it worked fine till the updates were done (this was before i was told about the update problem).

anybody know what i'm talking about? if so, other than reinstall, do you know of a fix?
