My kitty has cancer :(
so sorry to hear. we haven't had animals for very long, but we've had to put down 3 in the last 4 years. all of them were less than a year old, and i can't imagine losing a friend that has been with you that long.
When I took him to the vet a couple months ago I didn't use a pet carrier. They couldn't believe how calm he was, apparently most cats flip out. Nick just sat down on the table and chilled. The girls there said he's the sweetest cat they've seen and they've been really helpful and genuinely concerned. He's always been pretty laid back but he loves attention. There's been many times when I've felt down and he's jumped on my lap to paw at me or bite me on the nose(gently) to cheer me up. The little guy's been there for me so I've got to be there for him. Right now he's getting an anti-inflammatory and recently some pain medicine. I want to give him as many good days as I can. He still seems to want to keep going so I'm going to help him as much as I can. But when that sparkle in his eyes fade I'll take him in.
I had to put Nick to sleep today. He couldn't eat much and could barely swallow. He lost a lot of weight over the last few months and his breathing was more labored. What really told me it was time was that he couldn't handle much affection anymore. He'd purr for a little bit but then would go off to be alone, it seemed like he was in pain. The vet and her staff were really nice. They seemed genuinely sad it was not "business as usual" they really cared. The vet actually got choked up at one point. She told me she won't put an animal down unless it's the right thing to do and she's actually turned people away. That really helped me feel like it was the right decision. I haven't completely decided what to do with his ashes yet. I don't really want to keep them, and I don't have an appropriate place to spread them. The vet said she can take them and spread them in her garden like she has done with other pets. I'm leaning that way since she knows what a sweet cat he was she'll show him the respect he deserves.
for now I'm just going to see what damage I can do to this bottle of rum.

Don't worry I'm not going to go off the deep end or anything. I couldn't be an alcoholic even if I tried, hangovers suck. I still have Shiro(my other kitty) here to keep my company. He's been extra cuddly lately. That fat bastard has the softest fur and purrs if you just look at him so that will help.
sorry to hear man.
sorry, but this made me :chuckles:
