also check that "never dial a connection" is selected (tools | internet options | connections).

i've had a problem similar to that one before, and it was usually solved by going through the setup wizard on that connections screen of ie. :dunno:

also did those

went back to customer's today & doing registry removal fixed it

You sure it's winsock?

well, you would know for sure if you can't ping URL but can ping by IP.

you should get off win9x anyway, M$ doesnt even support it anymore. It's about time for Win2k or XP pro ...
