Default home networking questions

i want six wired rooms (pc's, xbox's, ps3's) and wireless for my laptops.

any suggestions for routers / what cable to get?

cat5? 5e? 6?

can i even get a wireless router that will support six or more wired connections?

i can't ever see them being online at the same time.

edit: i guess i'm not really "networking" everything together, i just want to have access in a lot of rooms.

I've only seen routers with 4 wired connections, one with 5. Why not just wire the things that really need the wired connection (xbox, ps3, 1-2pc's) and make everything else wireless?

most routers have four ports. but you can hook up switches to routers easily to give you more ports. i would run all the wiring to a structured wiring (or media) enclosure. they have different modules you can use that make it all pretty easy.

and i would run atleast 5e, if not 6. 5e is good enough for gigabit networking, so 6 isn't a must.

yea, unless you're willing to deal out big bucks for a real router for intense networking work you'll be getting a router/switch and a lot of those have a lot of ports, enough for 6 at least. using cat5e should be enough for the kind of stuff you're doing but if you got the money to use cat6 then be my guest.

i'm personally a physical line guy and have lines running through the house that my pops set up while the house was being built. i am itching to have some kind of wireless setup just for the ease and mobility of it. you'll definitely want security set up on wireless if you do and it should be stable enough for you to play your consoles while doing basic stuff with the comp/laptop.

Router + wired switch = more wired connections. I have that setup it works just fine.

3rd on router + switch.

i have 2 ports for each of the bedroom plus tv room. so that's 8 ports. i have a router with 4 port switch built in and a 8 port switch connected to one of the port.

Will running the switch create unique IP's for each port? Or will all devices run the same IP from the one router port the switch uses?
