If you want the check cut to you, tell your insurance to have an adjuster appraise the damage and cut a check to you.

what if they lowball>? I wanna take it to a quality shop and get a hefty quote cause I want it done right

If you take it to a shop, they will cut the check to the shop...this happens with shops that are approved by your insurance. If you want the check in your name, you have to have an adjuster for the company do the estimate.

so what happens if the adjuster gives a price of 1k and I take it to a trusted place and get a quote of 2k.

your adjuster will usually do the estimate at the place your car will be repaired. at least that's how things were for me in the past, including this most recent time. then there's little chance that there'll be a huge discrepancy

i'm sure there are ways you could abuse the system but that's your call

It doesn't work like this if you want the check in YOUR name, and not the name of the shop.
