Was about to get an EVO...
I hopped into the smartphone ring when I did because the phone had what I wanted. as for LTE isn't not going to be rolled out till around the begining of the new year, and there isn't going to be a ton of nation wide coverage. by the time I'm ready for a new phone after my 2 years are up the 4g coverage will be pretty decent by then and it will be worth it to get a 4g phone. In the meantime 3g isn't that shabby. I don't need to do anything super quick like I do on my home connection.
LTE is going to be a data service only, still uses the existing network to place calls.
Verizon is launching 25 LTE networks by November and then will roll it out to other places after that. For devices they will start with air cards and then maybe will have phones at some point. I'd say at least a year until then. So no, buying a non-LTE phone for use on Verizon now will not make it obsolete.
Plenty of folks here in Madison bought an Evo even though we're not scheduled to get Sprint 4G coverage any time soon. They use it on the 3G network just fine.
Also another android phone that will be out on all the carriers is the Samsung Galaxy S, which for some reason needs a different name on each carrier. AT&T Captivate, Verizon Fascinate, T-Mobile Vibrant and the Sprint Epic 4G (which gains a side-sliding QWERTY and 4G).

that makes it a year before you can upgrade to a new 4g phone.
So the point I was trying to make was, within a year some of the phones coming out now will obsolete.
I expect 3g/4g phones to hit the market in the 2nd quarter next year.
So for people that are signing two year contracts( which is almost everybody)
that makes it a year before you can upgrade to a new 4g phone.

Sprint has had 4G service launched in Baltimore (its first market) since October '08 and they only started selling a compatible phone in June '10. That's 20 months of nothing but air cards & mifis. VZW might not take that long but I don't think they'll be much quicker. Even if they do get phones out in Q2 2011 (which isn't that likely IMHO) there'll still only be ~25 markets where you could actually get service.
No access to 4G service = 3G phone ain't obsolete
sign up for the xda devolpers forum, then you will be able to download the file.
you will need astro file manager to install. so once you download the file, go into astro and do a search for flash, open up the file, install. once the install is done power off your phone and re-start and you've got flash.
