Is there a chance your timing is off for some reason?
Does it run rough when it runs? Cut out or anything like that?

I believe the only filter in the 2001 model is in the tank

If it was the filter it would starve as you increased fuel use.

Have you tried resetting the ECU? Might be a simple fix.
