I think Nirvana is terrible. Like, incredibly terrible. None of them can play worth a damn, and Kurt could be outlicked by 50% of the kids rocking out at Guitar Center right now. And, what the fuck is so great about the unplugged album? It's crap, on video, with a dialogue cheesier than the one between David Letterman and that band leader.

I never understood how they got so popular, and the reasoning I keep hearing is "they were doing something new".

Something new? I could start a drum session using my coffeetable, and that'll be something new. Done.

I think I just demand more talent, skill, and quality in my music.

It made me feel so awesome that I could learn any nirvana song in like 3 minutes h:

But in all honesty, yes, I know Kurt sucked at guitar, I know it was just a lot of shouting and bizarre lyrics, but Nirvana will always hold a special place in my heart h: Still one of my favorites.

And unplugged was great, but the best songs on the album were the ones Nirvana didn't write

I don't think they were great because of Kurt's guitar skills. It was their performance, lyrics, and influence. IMO.

Honestly, Kurt was a pretty bad musician. The intonation of his voice was simply atrocious (how in-tune you are). I think this was most evident with the unplugged album since it was live (which I used to love btw). I especially remember it being bad on Pennyroyal Tea.

On top of that, all the "power chords" really get old fast. They are just chords that only have root and fifth. When you take out the third from a chord (triad) you take away what makes a chord major or minor (the very thing that makes a chord interesting). This makes the chord very blah sounding. Bad guitarists often use them because they are easy to play compared to other chords. I mean all you basically do is bar your hand on the fret board and move it up and down keeping the same hand position. Even I can do that, and I don't have the end of my pinky finger... When you have chords that only have roots and fifths, you get parrallel fifth motion. This is a big no-no in music composition because it is unpleasing to the (trained) ear.

The other thing that bothers me are the lyrics. They are typically just a bunch of giberish with no meaning at all.

Nirvana was always more about the grunge scene than the music. I guess the bad intonation and un-interesting chords and lyrics w/ out meanin fit the grunge mentallity pretty well...

I crazy thing is I liked Nirvana when I was in High School. Quite a lot actually. I guess I was just naive and my ears were untrained at the time.

Agree to disagree. They sound like every other mainstream rock band, IMO. They have a couple songs I like, but for the most part they annoy me.

The grunge scene came about whilst I was in high school. I liked Nirvana, though I don't listen to them much these days. I think I like Alice in Chains better, I do still listen to them occasionally.

It's true, they used to rock... I was there man!! .... but now there's very little point in listening to them at all.
