I have an essentials too, not sure of the one you have but some have had power issues. This could explain why yours went corrupt, and I probably wouldn't trust the drive anymore.

I think the check for windows is dskchk or something. Its already on your computer.

you could also try freezing the drive in the freezer, or even outside if it's cold enough (done this before out a window at school :chuckles

Yeah, this sometimes works for emergency recovery.

I downloaded some recovery software demo and while it was scanning the drive my computer somehow recognized it and I was able to backup what I wanted.
