Vanity
Mindlessness
Self-obsession / Self-neglect
Conspicuous consumption
Repressed isolationism

I'm not explaining any of them yet. Reflect on each one first.

It used to be E Pluribus Unum ("out of many, one").

Now it's Ubi Est Mea ("where's mine?").

I guess it depends on who you talk to these days. I don't think there is a universal set anymore, even with an overindulgent, self-minded society as bad as ours. A couple categories to consider are...

What they used to be (of whose foundations were most likely religiously dominate)
What people express publicly
What people exercise behind closed doors
What seems to be popular at the time

Mix and match the above and it's easy to see why many people live troubled, empty, unbalanced lives. It seems to me that more often than not, people are like electricity; they follow the path of least resistance. What people can do is amazing, what people usually do is disappointing.

I gets mine.

seriously it's a "do for self" attitude and less about what may benefit the country or others as a whole.
