Default ubuntu crew - teach me

some tricks. i picked up this beater system (p3 5xxmhz, 256mb) from a friend of mine to fuck around with and its pretty slow. obviously the specs arent the best. should i bother with a processor upgrade or will memory suffice? i figure this board should take at least 512.

also, are there any programs that will work for using it as a file storage/ftp server, etc? any file system storage size limitations? any sata pci cards that are recommended over others? that's essentially why i picked it up

xubuntu, it's a fairly low resource version that comes with GNOME-like interface [XFce]

windows integration through Samba is availible regardless of distro. annnnd unless you have sata drives sitting around it might make more sense to just run IDE

make sure you set up your smb.conf right

there are tons of guides on the net... you might just not be pointing to any directories

I like the regular Ubuntu myself, but I have been running it for about 2 1/2 years.

The best thing to do once you install it is to open up synaptic and type FTP and see what results you get. There are a couple of good progs out there for it, just do a web search, and then use synaptic to install.

can i take this HD and put it in another computer? i have this old computer i could bring back to life thats better specs than this computer i picked up.

will it just hot swap? or is it like windows in which you have to do a partial reinstall?

if not, is it difficult to install? anyone have a link or source for the download?

most of the time it will hot swap ok, but it is better to do a reinstall, won't take more than 45 minutes.
