Well like you said, Coronado is nice, but there's nothing else to it than what you saw.
La Jolla is a coastal community that's fairly classy and has great restaurants and shopping. Pacific beach is a typical college beach town jam packed with super fun and casual bars. Downtown and the gaslamp have decent night life and there are lots of great places to visit.
best of all Craig is in San Diego. He's our main attraction.

If you can spare the time, take Hwy 1 as often as possible.
Big Sur is not to be missed and you can rejoin US-101 near San Luis Obispo to hit LA, then 405 and the 5 to SD.
I'd split the drive over two days, staying somewhere near San Simeon for the first night.
If you can spare a third day, it'll make the LA to SD drive a lot less painful.

for sushi, go to Tadashi in La Jolla. There is another more local type joint with a REALLY well trained sushi chef His name is sam and it's more korean style, but the shit he does is AWESOME. here's a good blog with some legit sushi spots;

For steak, you have donovan's steak house, ruth's chris and flemmings. You can't miss with any of the 3.

like dave said the drive on 1 is a sight to see. can be sorta sketchy in bad weather though, so hopefully the weather is good next week. sf's weather may be a little dreary so check on that. first time in sf you should do the touristy things though japantown, chinatown, fisherman's warf and the piers, trolleys, etc. sd's weather is always good so just chilling downtown and visiting the surrounding areas and the beaches should be cool. also the mexican food :thumbup:

As to Highway 1, I did that trip in 07 and spent 5 days between Carmel and San Simeon. There are some AWESOME things to see. Eat at Nepenthe, Partington's Cove, Hearst Castle, Elephant Seal Beach (just north of the castle), all 400+ turn outs, etc...
If you and your loved one wants to do the Zoo, let me know. If I accompany you, I can get 2 people in for free as my guests
