If you can spare the time, take Hwy 1 as often as possible.
Big Sur is not to be missed and you can rejoin US-101 near San Luis Obispo to hit LA, then 405 and the 5 to SD.

I'd split the drive over two days, staying somewhere near San Simeon for the first night.
If you can spare a third day, it'll make the LA to SD drive a lot less painful.
