If they were macs, all you'd need is a firewire cable.

new macbooks don't come with firewire IIRC [only on pro?]

on the contrary my last 4 PC's have all had IEEE1394, granted vista doesn't support networking like XP did

Yup. No firewire on the macbook pro. I work with guys with huge budgets and buy new machines when they come out, that won't go near it because of that and the glossy screen.

Holding down T on start up turning the donor machine into an external hard drive was just smart.

Brett, I just bought a 16gig flash drive for $20 from newegg. Might be a good option.

new MBP's DO have firewire unless you buy the 12". The 15 and 17 have it. FW800 FTW. But right under the battery cover, you can pop the HD out without tools & plug it into something else. Even better/faster.

I'll repost
1. Use the Network! You don't even have to share anything! just connect to the UNC path. Right click "my computer" > properties. Check off 'allow users to connect remotely' (the second check box) Below that, you'll see the computer name. In run, type \\computername\c$ (or drive letter) and it'll prompt you for username & password (I think windows XP home has issues w/ this, but it MIGHT still work)
2. USB drive.

I just want something faster than the wireless network. I'll make him buy a crossover cable...plus then I can use it later if I need to. :rick:

instead of going wireless, just leave his old PC on the network and use it as a file server.
