I've got a basic Springfield 1911 (my first handgun), which was around $500 >10 years ago. They seem to be much more expensive these days. I'd like to get another, but I haven't quite decided what I want. My Sigs and XDs may be lighter, but I'm leaning towards an old-fashioned steel frame 1911. If the SHTF, I'd like to be able to shoot +P ammo without worrying about aluminum or polymer frames cracking under the stress (mostly because I happen to have a number of boxes of +P hollowpoints - just making sure I'm prepared for the zombie apocalypse).

it's not that they're bad but way overrated. a lot of people buy them because everyone thinks they are "elite" 1911's. truth is you can buy a gun just as good for less.
I personally would rather have a para, sig, or springfield in that price range.

I own a R.I.A. as well as a friend of mine and my father. They all shoot good. But keep in mind they are cheap because they aren't employing highly experienced builders. So you may need to do a little extractor tuning or buff the rails a little. The slide to frame fit on all three guns I've shot was excellent. I did buff mine and tune the extractor a little. I've run over 1,00rds of simiwadcutters this summer and it is just as smooth as some of the expensive 1911's.

just avoid +p if you can regardless. the extra wear, muzzle climb, and flash is not worth an extra 50fps. it's just a marketing ploy to make people think their gun is more powerful with that ammo. the truth is no attacker that would fight through a standard pressure round is going to stop because it's +p.

I haven't handled an R1 but they're great from what I hear. Another entry option is the para GI Expert.
