There are some parts that degrade from use, but the real degradation is that we can only run the same experiment so many times before it stops making more value (I've seen some people confused about this). The value of what we extract is less and less as more and more data is accumulated.

Whaaaat? You know it only takes 8 minutes for light from the sun to reach the earth and mars is closer than the sun so it would take less than 8 minutes to get to mars at the speed of light.
